In-Orbit Calibration of the Distortion of the SOHO/LASCO-C2 Coronagraph

چکیده
This paper describes distortion calibration procedures for the SOHO/LASCO-C2 Coronagraph, based on in-orbit data and extensive image processing methods. It addresses specific problems of externally occulted coronagraphs (obstructed center of field-of-view, strong vignetting, and presence of stray light) and limitations inherent to space-based instrumentation (cosmic rays and limited number of reference points).

Update of the Photometric Calibration of the LASCO-C2 Coronagraph Using Stars
We present an update to the photometric calibration of the LASCO-C2 coronagraph onboard the SOHO spacecraft. We obtained the new calibration using data from the beginning of the mission in 1996 until 2013. We re-examined the LASCO-C2 photometric calibration by comparing the past three calibrations and the present calibration with the goal of validating an in-flight calibration. We find a photom...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Tracking of Coronal Mass Ejections in Coronagraph Time Series
We present the current capabilities of a software tool to automatically detect coronal mass ejections (CMEs) based on time series of coronagraph images: the solar eruptive event detection system (SEEDS). The software developed consists of several modules: preprocessing, detection, tracking, and event cataloging. The detection algorithm is based on a 2D to 1D projection method, where CMEs are as...
متن کاملAnalysis and interpretation of a fast limb CME with eruptive prominence, C-flare and EUV dimming
Aims. Coronal mass ejections or CMEs are large dynamical solar-corona events. The mass balance and kinematics of a fast limb CME, including its prominence progenitor and the associated flare, will be compared with computed magnetic structures to look for their origin and effect. Methods. Multi-wavelength ground-based and spaceborne observations are used to study a fast W-limb CME event of Decem...
متن کاملTime Domain Analysis of Polar Plumes Observed with the LASCO/SOHO Coronagraph
The polar regions of the solar corona exhibit during solar minima very faint ray-like structures which apparently outline the lines of polar magnetic field. Usually they are named plumes in the solar coronal literature. In order to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of these plumes we analyze a sequence of 400 continuous observations covering a period of 3 days. For such analysis we ...
متن کاملInvestigating the kinematics of coronal mass ejections with the automated CORIMP catalog
Studying coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in coronagraph data can be challenging due to their diffuse structure and transient nature, compounded by the variations in their dynamics, morphology and frequency of occurrence. The large amounts of data available from missions like the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) make manual cataloging of CMEs tedious and prone to human error, and so a rob...
